When Your Body Won’t Let Go: Understanding Fascia, Tension, and Protective Holding Patterns
That familiar tightness in your neck, hips, low back or jaw may not be asking you to push harder, stretch deeper or simply endure it.
When the body has spent months or years protecting itself from stress, overuse, injury or emotional strain, it can begin to hold tension as a pattern. Myofascial constriction is one way to describe this feeling of being bound, compressed or unable to move freely from the inside out.
For many people, the frustrating part is that the discomfort seems to move. You release your shoulders, then your low back complains. Your hip improves, but your neck tightens. Or you feel better for a short time, only for the same familiar tension to return.
This doesn't necessarily mean that something has gone wrong. Sometimes it means we need to look beyond the place that hurts and ask a different question:
